About Laxgalts’ap

Lax̱g̱alts’ap Village Government (LVG) is a Nisg̱a’a community of 600 members, governed by seven elected leaders. Our leaders consist of six Councillors and one Chief Councillor which govern the affairs of Lax̱g̱alts’ap. LVG is operated under the Nisg̱a’a Nation laws. The LVG administration oversees various departments including housing, education, social assistance, economic development, daycare, finance, and municipal services, ensuring comprehensive service delivery to the community. The Village is renowned for its commitment to maintaining the cultural practices, language, and ceremonies that are integral to Nisga’a life.

The Nisga’a people have lived at or near Laxgaltsʼap since time before memory, according to Nisga’a oral history.

1700

A typical year for the Nisga’a in, say, 1700, would be shaped by movements through the valley to harvest and process food. The Nisga’a system relied on complex kinship relations or mutual arrangements, as determined and dictated by Ayuukhl Nisga’a (the law of the people).

1741

In 1741, the first European reached Nisga’a territory and about fifty years later, the British arrived, Hudson’s Bay Company set up trading posts along the Nass River, missionaries arrived, and a gold rush triggered an influx of prospectors.

2000

In May 2000, the Nisga’a Treaty came into effect, after a long journey of petitions, landmark court battles, and steadfast commitment to sovereignty. It was the first modern treaty in British Columbia and made news around the world.
